Rites Of Passage

I heard about something very disconcerting this week. In Eden Prairie, one the Twin Cities’ suburbs, the high school administrators have reprimanded, and in some cases suspended over 100 students from sports and athletic activities after Facebook pics of them partying like rock stars. The most disturbing aspect of the whole story was that administrators were surfing Facebook, viewing pictures of the young, nubile, taught flesh their students had. That seems more than a little creepy. And then they were printing them out? What, to review them in the privacy of the bathroom while they beat off?

Fortunately, there wasn’t any Facebook or Myspace available back in my day (which wasn’t all that long ago, I graduated in 2002). High School boozing it up is a rite of passage, and if anything the people I’ve noticed that had issues with alcohol consumption in an unhealthy manner later in life we re the ones that DIDN’T drink in high school. What boggles my mind is that this was all going on after hours. It would be one thing if the students were drunk at school, but they weren’t. Hell, they should reward the students for being able to separate their personal lives from their scholastic lives. It’s when drinking encroaches and affects your home/professional (and when you’re a student, school IS your job) is when it is a problem.
drinking

Suspending students from their athletic or other extracurricular activities because they were drinking is probably the most asinine way to deal with it. Now they will be more inclined to drink because they don’t have anything else to do after school. Great job Eden Prairie! You’re fortunate I already gave out this January’s Douchebag of The Month award.

This is so fucked up ... and how come there can't be a twin pack of douches this month??

I always found it odd how shools/Employers could discipline people for what they do in their spare time. If it's not happening on the clock then it's none of their business.

You know some schools have hired a person who's sole job is to "monitor" the students online activities. They are supposed to search for myspace and facebook pages and blogs and whatever else they can find.

I'm very outraged by this but also want that job very much. ;-)

If it's a private school I can understand monitoring their private lives to a certain degree, but not for public schools.

Did Jay just said that they PAY people to do this?!?

PAY THEM?!?!?

WTF am I doing here answering this goddamn phone?!?! I should be surfing MySpace and FaceBook for money RIGHT NOW.

I'm guessing I'd be able to rise to #4, maybe even #2, on Chris Hansen's "To Catch a Predator" top-10 offenders list.

Dammit.

I always say just a little too much.

P.S. I almost forgot. Love your new profile pic. ;-)

That too drives me nuts. As long as people do what they are supposed to do at school or work. Get off of their backs.

Of course, they are only doing this "for the good of the kids", because we live in the United States of Nannydom. Cheers!!

That's weird, when I was in high school everyone smoked dope. alcohol wasn't popular at all.

Honestly though, these kids shouldn't be putting their mugs on facebook until they are safe from reprisal.

Duh, put up a fake pic and party away.

Kids have gotten so lazy at sneakin' around!

Just more bullshit from the schools, they should concentrate on educating not parenting, that's not their fucking job.

I wish someone would have suspended me when I was in high school. All that extra drinking time would have been priceless.

That's the very reason kids should not post their true identity online.

...and of course to keep themselves safe from Moooooog!

Too many busybodies running around trying to control everyone else. I agree with it being creepy the high paid administrators have time to surf Facebook. Your new photo is smoking.

Ah, the internet. Destroyer of personal boundaries everywhere.

I went to a private high school and that is how they did things. If you were caught drinking or smoking weed or whatever, they would suspend you from sports or other extra-curricular activities.

Of course at public school there are different critera, but I don't have a problem with there being some consequence for kids partying. Maybe suspension is too much, but kids need to learn that there are consquences to their actions.

How old do I sound, by the way?? LOL

I think in light of this revelation, you should make a special exception to the douche bag award and maybe make a double douche bag award for those very special cases. It is still early in the month after all.
If a third such nomination or award is needed, you could always go to "your momma's double douche bag award" if need be.

Just my two cents of worthless suggestions.

I couldn't agree with you more!

Maybe school officials should be suspended from school for surfing the internet looking for pictures on their students?

Why shouldn't kids be allowed a private life? What they do in school could be grounds for suspension, but what they do in their own time is their own damn business...

I think that the parents should sue the school district. That will end it, I guarantee.

Hi - just wanted to say thanks for visiting my blog. I'll be sure to let you know where land.

I am horrified by Jay's comment, the pay someone to do this?! I'm with you - this is at the very most an issue between the parent's and the kids, shouldn't have anything to do with the school. But then we seem to be in "legislate everything mode" right now, the government knows what's best for you better than you do.

How do they even get the authority to punish you for stuff that you did off of school campus? Come on.

stupid kids, the first rule is always no evidence. if i was in high school today, anyone who showed up with a camera or took pictures with a phone while I was boozing or smoking pot or groping chicks would get a swift kick to the nuts or girly nether region. posting that shit online is stupid they deserve to get in trouble.

The students should sue that fucked up, backwards school system.

It is another occasion were school admin doesn't know what the fuck to do or handle new technology. I am so tired of teachers and others complaining about problems with cell phones, ipods and computers.

If all my students had cells I would require it in my classes. I already use my ipod every day in my classes.

Buzzardbilly said...

Okay, maybe I can understand having a person to trawl the net for student postings (in light of Columbine and Virginia Tech), but I don't think drinking, smoking, and/or fucking should be what they're looking for at all.

The parents should sue because the school has no grounds to punish them unless they were on a school-sponsored outing when the pictured party occurred.

Besides, I think most lawyers would say there's no way to tell if someone is actually drinking or mugging for the camera in still photos.

Most of my teachers were permanently pissed.

Who says I learned nowt from school then? ;-)

Same damn thing happened in my town at the high school I attended. But what's worse is that the 35 year old woman who bought the high school kids the liquor is the one who posted the pictures of them drinking on Facebook! Are you kidding me?
What friggin code is she living by?

I do understand being punished for using steroids or getting caught doing something on campus, but if the things they're doing aren't interfering with their extra curricular activities, I say, let 'em have their fun. Then again, anyone stupid enough to post pictures of themselves doing illegal shit as a minor deserves to get busted.

It's a shame so many people forget what it's like to be a teenager.

p.s. cute new profile pic.

WTF???

What's wrong with " surfing Facebook, viewing pictures of the young, nubile, taught flesh their students"???

I do that all the time; drunk, high school chicks are hot!
